Pondering: To reflect or consider with thoroughness and care.

About two years ago my sister gave me this book.
I think I may have blogged about it then.
I have used it to write my thoughts....my ponderings
when I read scriptures or other related materials.

For me there are very valuable "ponderings"
in these pages.  I am so glad I have written my
thoughts and discoveries and enlightenments
down.  I have decided to read through it since
it is almost full.  I am amazed at what really
impressed me 18 months ago, a  year ago,
a couple of months ago.  All of these
writings are recordings of my feelings about
gospel principles.  I remember them very well
once I read them again.  They meant so much
at the time of my writing.  Never to be forgotten
studies.  But I have forgotten.  At least I move on
from principle to principle.
My point here is a written record is so valuable.
Even for the writer.  I have returned to these
recorded personal feelings and there they are.
Alive and well.  Just need to be revisited.

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers. ~Claude Monet

I am new to the flower growing crowd.
The last several years I have managed
to plant, cultivate, and grow flowers.
There is a lot of satisfaction in that.
These are Echinacea.
And they are happy in my yard.

Maybe my mom would be proud of me.
Maybe just surprised!

I love them.

The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.

We have needed a new roof for about 5 years.
We finally got it taken care of.  I am so glad.
David is so glad.  We were both so pleased with
it that it made us have new pride of ownership.
We worked hard yesterday and took care of
other chores that we hadn't wanted to face.

I have to say that I love it when David does
man stuff around our place.  It makes me feel
that it is OUR place.  He's busy making it
our place and I'm busy making it our place.
I just like that feeling.

My plan for this job was have our sons and sons in law
come up for a long weekend, take the old roof off,
and put on the new one.  A Friday-Saturday thing.
It took nearly two weeks for it to get done.
It would never have been done in two days.

Pete called one day to find out what weekend we
were going to do the roof and I told him
we were hiring out the work.  I heard a great sigh
of relief.  Pete had worked as a roofer in the
summers before he got married.  So he knew.

But it's done and it feels so good!

Summer Drought

Rain is not the only thing that
there is too little of in the summer.
TV stinks.  We don't care for
summer sports...on TV anyway.
All our shows are in rerun...boring.

These have saved us:

Longmire.  Great drama.
Love this guy and his ways.

Duck Dynasty
 Good for laughs.
Hope you are watching.

A cord and a half.

We grew our own firewood.
Really.
This is the wood from the Spruce
tree and the Aspens that we cut down
this summer.  David split them yesterday.
Nice.  We are a cord and half ahead.
Considering the cost of having them
cut down ~ it is much cheaper to drive
up the mountain and get wood there.

I DREAMED A DREAM

Silverton 2013

David has dreamed of Silverton every day, let me correct that, every hour for the last 6 months.  It might not be healthy for him to dream that long.  Put it on the calendar and forget it until a month or so before.

As he drove out of Silverton in 2012 he felt that he might not ever make it back there.  Well he did, we did, and we were with some great people and once again saw the beauty of the San Juan Mountains.

Looking west as the sun breaks through clouds
and touches Silverton.

South edge of town looking towards
the pass the train travels through.

We did have a minor hiccup.  Just after we crossed the Arizona border into New Mexico we had a fuse blow when a wire touched the exhaust as we went over a bump.  Just like that we had not gas to the engine.  David thought it was a fuse
issue and checked them all.  All but the fuses in the ECM (electric control module).  ECM was electric and the fuel pump was a pump.  We had to call a tow truck.  He came out of Gallup and was the nicest man.  He called a shop for us and guaranteed us it was an honest shop.  It was and they had us on the road in about 30 minutes.  David kicked himself for not making the connection between the fuel pump and the ECM.  Will be smarter next time.

It could have been worse.

Our new friend from Gallup came and got us.

These guys were so good to us.
We were on the road within an hour.

We made it to Silverton hours later than we had anticipated.  Trent Keime and his two boys and daughter were there waiting for us.  Only thing to do was go to dinner.  We ate at THEE PIG.  It was the best BBQ I have ever eaten.  And they had fried pickles and onion rings.  To die for!!  I recommend it.

We stayed in this camp cabin the first two nights.  I was especially glad the first night as I did not want to set up our tent after traveling all day.

The Tent Cabin we stayed in the first two nights.

Oh wait....I mean this one.
The Keime kids all bought knives.  I had it explained to me by another man that some people like this and some people like that and some people like knives.  So I get it.  These guys, ages 18, 15, and 13 all made bows and arrows and quivers with their knives.  I was amazed at their ability to enjoy a willow branch and a knife for hours and to enjoy each other’s work.
Tuesday the Keime’s and we met up with Trent Penrod and his family.  We had heard that there were moose sightings just west of town.  You can’t do any better when looking for wildlife than to be in Trent Penrod’s company.  Long story short he called one in.  I loved it.

He probably never was hiding from us but he just stood for a long time in one spot~we couldn’t see his body (which he did a good job of hiding) but those antlers were in full view.  Made me laugh!  Trent started calling and that bull Moose came.  He was a bit confused because he could smell our scent but that call was driving him crazy.  Sorry about my blurred video when he came close we started scrambling.  You don’t want to tangle with a love sick Moose.

We went up Imogene and over to Telluride.  It was a good day.

On the trail to Imogene.
I have missed this other times at the waterfall.
This must have been somebody else's favorite place too.
RIP

I need to find all our photos atop Imogene.
Colorado has been doing some restoration work.
This sign is new and made to last.

The Keime Family.  Trent, the dad, is a good man.  He has had struggles in his past but turned his life around and tries so hard to do right by his family.  I will never forget his talk in church when he said he used to say, “I am a member of the church but….” And now he says, “I am a member of the church so….”

He is the best example of “so”.

The Penrod Family.  Trent loves David.   And Trent has some fabulous camera gear.  He had a timed lapse camera, for one, that he set up on the side of the road coming into camp just to watch the day go by North mountain.  I had never seen the outfit that tells which way the air is moving.  (This is how we knew the Moose had our scent.)  He told David that this was the best trip they had ever been on.

The Wright Family.  I think Doug might have been as excited to go as David was.  He brought his parents, who were great people, and Daniel, their youngest son, a nephew and a friend from their ward.  I never knew boys could talk so much.  So Much!!  They are easy camping friends.  In one conversation the friend from their ward learned that they had a son, Ben, who had died from cancer.  He was surprised and asked how that was.  Doug we learned if you turn to Heavenly Father he will strengthen you.  If you grow bitter towards him he can’t help you.  This is so evident in their lives.

Come Wednesday Pete, Megan, Melanie, and Jett came in.  I was so happy to see them.  So pleased to share them with our camp friends.  We had just had the kids for the 4th of July so to have this second time so close to that really helped me feel close to them.  They were good sports the whole time.  I have to say to have family come made my trip.

It is a long trek from Tucson.  but we were so glad they came.
Como Lake after Poughkeepsie Gulch.

Animas Forks.  We love to stop at this old mining
town.  They are working at some restoration, as you can see.
I had to get this picture of Jett.  He walked into this
house and right into that whole.  Just dropped down.

The Animas was perfect for play.

We were in Silverton for five days.
We traveled about 75 miles total.
But you see so much.
These are just some things from this trip.

We knew this boy.  He dated our oldest daughter, Jill.
He was killed here about five years ago.
This is just a couple miles SW of Silverton.
He took Jill to the Senior Prom.  He asked her with
a can of Campbell soup...set it on the hood of her car.

 On top of Engineer Pass.
 After the rain storm lifted.
Jill and John's son Quinn still has a place
of prominence in the photo shop in Silverton.
 The train from Durango.

 Wagon for atmosphere.
This little creek in Silverton shows the mineral content.
This is just south of Ouray.  They have made this outlook
over the canyon.
Favorite shot.
Bigfoot did good!

The main event.  David and Pete couldn't get out
and do some hard trails.  This is Poughkeepsie.
These pictures need to be in 3D for the difficulty
to be shown.

BOOKS

I am a slow reader.  It takes me a long time to make it through any book.
And a longer time if I am learning good stuff.  Right now I have two VERY slow reads on my desk.  They would bless anyone’s life if you were to read them.
Here are my recommendations:

THE FEARLESS MIND
CRAIG MANNING
This book was written by the Women’s Tennis coach at BYU.  Not sure if he is LDS….doesn’t matter.  He has studied what makes a gifted and strong and hardworking athlete never achieve what she (he) could.  His conclusion is fear.  He addresses other negative mental habits.  Two that really hit me were the thoughts of yesterday and the thoughts of tomorrow.  First of all, you can’t do anything about either of those days.  Yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come.  But we obsess about our mistakes of yesterday and our fears of tomorrow.  These two “days” interfere with our ability to live in the moment.  The book is easy to read and very eye opening.

FALLING TO HEAVEN
JAMES L. FERRELL
Every chapter of this book is a watershed of enlightenment.  The last chapter I read asked the question “How many times does the Savior tell us to forgive ourselves?”  Answer: none.  He does say to repent….repent and again to repent.  I have thought about this a lot since reading this.  When our focus is on us….nothing changes.  When our focus is on Christ all things are possible.

In many ways both books correlate principles.  It takes mental energy to develop the processes that help us stop repeating the same thoughts over and over again….and in this case training ourselves to turn from our destructive thinking to thinking about Christ and his lifting power.

BODE

 Thanks Lucas Gang!

I think Bode could live with us.  His family was in Pinetop for a Brooks gathering.  The day, actually the minute, they were to leave for home he asked me if he could stay.  He was here from Wednesday through Sunday morning.  We would say, “do you want to call your mom….your dad….your family?”  Each time It was, “no, not right now.”  (I kinda started feeling bad for his family.)  But I think he fulfilled some of his Pinetop dreams one of which was to have a lemonade stand.  He made money!  People were so sweet and generous.  He did it for two days.  The only disappointed person was a lady who asked if his lemonade had ice in it.  It was 2pm and he had been out there since noon with a pitcher on the table.  No ice.  She screeched away.  He was unaffected.  My neighbor, Cyrus who is 9 came over twice.  Repeat customer.

He would take a break and go over to Cyrus’ because they were having a yard sale.  Bode bought a cap gun and Dylan and Cyrus must have thought Bode needed a cowboy outfit.  Each time he would wander over to the yard sale he would come back with something....a pair of cowboy boots....a fake leather jacket and finally a shirt that looked like cowhide (black and white). The hat belongs
to Grandpa. It was fun to watch.
